What Is an ED Visa in Thailand?

An ED visa lets you study Thai, English, or Japanese in Thailand legally for 12-15 months. According to Thailand’s Ministry of Education, only MOE-recognized schools can sponsor ED visas. GEOS has maintained this recognition for over 20 years.

How it works:

  • Initial visa: 90 days
  • Renew every 60-90 days at Bangkok Immigration
  • GEOS handles all paperwork and accompanies you
  • Total duration: 15 months (Japanese), 14 months (Thai), or 12 months (English)

Important: Digital arrival card (May 2025)
Thailand introduced a new digital arrival system. This doesn’t affect ED visa applications but changes your arrival process. Read our full guide here.

One-language rule
You cannot study the same language twice on consecutive ED visas. After completing 14 months of Thai, you must switch to English or Japanese to extend your stay.

Why is an ED visa more reliable than a DTV?

Thailand’s new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) offers 5 years, but it comes with serious drawbacks for expats wanting to settle long-term.

DTV limitations:

Most Thai banks won't open accounts for DTV holders
Switching from DTV to a work visa is complicated and unclear
No approval guarantee — embassies have variable approval rates and can reject applications without explanation
Long-term stability uncertain — rules could change

ED visa advantages:

Open a Thai bank account after 6 months of study
100% approval rate when you submit complete documents with GEOS guidance — we can confirm approval before you start
Clear pathway to work visa after completing your course
Proven track record — stable visa type for 20+ years

Who Should Get an ED Visa in Thailand?

Gap-year students:: Live in Bangkok legally while learning a language intensively.
Long-term travelers: Stay 12-15 months without visa runs. (Note: ED visa doesn't permit Thai employment, but you can study while working remotely.)
Future expats: Test life in Bangkok before committing to a work visa or permanent move.
Career changers: Learn Thai or Japanese to qualify for jobs in Thailand or international companies.
Serious language learners: Commit to 6-9 hours weekly of structured classes with native teachers.
Important: ED visas do not allow you to work in Thailand. You must attend classes regularly to maintain your visa status.
