IELTS Preparation in Bangkok: What It Really Takes

Moving up one IELTS band score usually takes focused, one-to-one practice guided by a properly trained instructor, not a generic group class. IELTS scores four skills separately, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, each on the same 1 to 9 band scale. How long preparation takes depends on your starting level, your target score, and how much time you can practise each week. At GEOS Language Centre in Bangkok, our IELTS course is taught one-to-one by a CELTA and TESOL-qualified trainer with 15 years of experience. Because every lesson is private, your instructor can spend the full session on the exact band descriptors holding your score back. Here is what the course covers, how long it typically takes, and what your first lesson looks like.

How Long Does It Take to Improve an IELTS Band Score?

There is no single answer that applies to every student. The British Council itself avoids giving a fixed timeline, since your starting level, target score, and how much you can practise each week all change the picture.

As a working guide, our IELTS trainer estimates around 100 hours of focused instruction per full band improvement, based on his experience teaching IELTS candidates in Bangkok. That is not a promise, since two students starting at the same band can progress at different speeds, but it gives you a realistic planning number when you are deciding how far ahead of your test date to start.

What Makes Private IELTS Coaching Different from Group Classes?

In a group class, the lesson has to move at the pace of the whole room. A private IELTS lesson at GEOS moves at your pace only. Say your Writing Task 2 essays are strong, but your Speaking Part 3 answers run out of ideas after ten seconds. Your entire next session can focus on that gap. It won’t get diluted across four skills you may not all need equally.

This matters more for IELTS than for general English, since the exam scores each skill separately and your overall band is an average. A private course lets your instructor target the specific skill that is capping your score

What Does an IELTS Course at GEOS Actually Include?

Every IELTS student works one-to-one with the same trainer for the length of their course. Sessions are held at GEOS’s Sukhumvit location, a short walk from BTS Asoke and MRT Sukhumvit. That makes it easy to fit lessons around work or study. Your trainer starts with a diagnostic assessment across all four skills. From there, they build a study plan around the gap between your current level and your target band.

Which IELTS Test Should I Take, Academic or General Training?

If you are applying to a university or professional body, you almost always need IELTS Academic. If your goal is immigration, work, or general training visas, you need IELTS General Training. The reading and writing sections differ between the two. Confirm which one your institution or visa route requires before you book your test. Studying for the wrong version wastes preparation time.

At GEOS, we ask which test you need during your first consultation and build your one-to-one plan around it from day one.
