Tourist Visa First: Best Route to a Thai ED Visa

We recommend arriving in Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa if you plan to apply for an ED visa, because it gives you more time to finish the paperwork.

A tourist visa allows up to 60 days on entry, while a visa exemption now gives 30 days, and both can possibly be extended by 30 days. Immigration makes the final decision on every application, so no route is guaranteed. At GEOS, our 20+ years of MOE recognition and 100% approval rate for complete applications come with staff who go with you to your first ED visa appointment at Chaeng Watthana. This is GEOS’s recommended route, not a requirement for every applicant. Here is how to decide, and what to send us before you book.

Why Does GEOS Recommend Arriving on a Tourist Visa?

A tourist visa is issued by a Thai embassy before you fly. It allows up to 60 days on entry, and you may be able to extend it once by 30 days. You can read the current rules on the official Thai e-Visa website, and our guide to the tourist visa to education visa process

The ED visa takes time. GEOS’s current estimate is 50–60 days to process, or 60–70 days if your nationality needs a criminal record check. These are estimates, and we review them regularly (last reviewed October 2026).

Arriving with 60 days already in your passport lets you start the paperwork straight away and still keep a buffer. A buffer helps when a document arrives late.

Can I Apply for an ED Visa After Entering on a Visa Exemption?

It can be possible. Many students do it. But a 30-day exemption plus a 30-day extension does not guarantee enough processing time.

Before we advise you, GEOS checks four things:

  • Your nationality, including whether you need a criminal record check
  • Your entry history, including any recent stays in Thailand
  • How many days you have left on your stay
  • The current application timeline

What If I Have Already Booked My Flight?

Contact GEOS before you change anything. Many bookings can still work.

In some cases, you can arrive as planned, and we start the paperwork. You may then need a later trip outside Thailand to apply for a tourist visa at an embassy. That only works if your nationality is eligible and the embassy’s processing time fits your plans, so we check both first.

Requirements may vary by embassy. Always confirm with the embassy you plan to use.

Why Do Working Days Matter More Than Calendar Days?

Offices work on weekdays. Documents do not move on weekends or public holidays. So count working days, not calendar days.

Here is an example. Say you arrive on November 1, 2026 with a 60-day stay. It ends on December 30. Those 60 calendar days contain 43 weekdays.

Thai public holidays then reduce that further. December 7 (the substitute day for the King’s Birthday, which falls on a Saturday) and December 10 (Constitution Day) leave 41 working days.

What Should I Send GEOS Before I Travel?

Send us these details before you book or change anything:

  • Your chosen language (English, Thai or Japanese)
  • Your nationality
  • Your planned arrival date
  • If you are already in Thailand, your current stamp and its expiry date

We will tell you which route fits. If you are settling in, you may also like our guide to the best areas to live in Bangkok

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A tourist visa is GEOS’s recommended route, not a requirement for every applicant. Many students arrive on a visa exemption, but that gives less time. We check your nationality, arrival date, and current timeline before advising you.

Up to 60 days on entry. You can extend it once by 30 days at an immigration office. Requirements may vary by embassy, so always confirm the current rules with the Thai embassy where you plan to apply.

GEOS’s current estimate is 50 to 60 days, or 60 to 70 days if your nationality requires a criminal record check. This is an estimate, not an official timeline. We last reviewed it in October 2026 and will review it again in January 2027.

Yes. The English program has open intake, so you can start as soon as your visa is ready. There are no fixed intake dates. Thai and Japanese programs use monthly intake. At GEOS, our MOE acceptance letters and 100% approval rate for complete applications support every start date.

You may need to leave Thailand and re-enter, which costs time and money. This is why we ask you to share your dates before you book. A short conversation with our team can show whether a tourist visa or a visa exemption fits your timeline.

Sometimes, but we usually do not recommend it. You must first come to Thailand and register at the school. Once the approval letter is issued, it is valid for only 30 days. You then leave Thailand, apply at the Thai embassy or consulate, and stay abroad while it processes your application. This has two drawbacks. First, the timing has to be right, because you have only 30 days to get the paperwork back from the consulate. You need to check the consulate’s processing time yourself. Second, you may wait abroad for up to 30 days, paying for extra accommodation, so it costs much more than waiting in Thailand. The best option is to get a tourist visa before you come to Thailand. If you cannot, we can start your application here. You then leave Thailand and re-enter on a tourist visa, which gives you the time you need to finish it. Requirements may vary by embassy, so always confirm with the embassy you plan to use.
