Tourist Visa to Education Visa Thailand: Complete Guide
You can convert a tourist visa to an education visa while inside Thailand at Chaeng Watthana Immigration in Bangkok. The application process takes 30-45 days from enrollment to receiving your ED visa approval, or 50-60 days if you’re from a country requiring a criminal record check. GEOS handles all required documents, including MOE applications, school acceptance letters, and immigration paperwork.
At GEOS, our 20+ years of MOE recognition and 100% approval rate mean we manage the entire visa process for you. You pay 2,000 THB directly to immigration for the visa application and your first term tuition to GEOS (28,500 THB for English or Japanese, 25,000 THB for Thai). English students can start classes immediately after applying, while Thai and Japanese students begin on monthly enrollment dates. International students can stay in Thailand for 12 months studying English, 14 months studying Thai, or 15 months studying Japanese.
This guide walks you through the exact process GEOS students follow at Bangkok Immigration.
Note: As of February 2026, Thailand is reviewing a potential reduction of the visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days. No decision has been made. If passed, students entering on a visa exemption would need to enroll at GEOS immediately to ensure enough time to complete the 30-35 day ED visa process. We will update this page when confirmed.
Can You Convert a Tourist Visa to an Education Visa in Thailand?
Yes. You can change the type of visa from tourist to non-immigrant ED at Chaeng Watthana Immigration in Bangkok without leaving Thailand.
This process works whether you entered Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa or a 30-day visa exemption stamp. The change of visa happens at the immigration office in Bangkok, and GEOS handles all paperwork with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Immigration.
Here’s what GEOS students actually do:
International students enroll at GEOS and pay for their first term. GEOS submits the MOE application on your behalf and receives approval within 10 days. You then make two visits to Chaeng Watthana Immigration with all other GEOS students who applied during the same period. The first visit is for document verification, and the second visit is when you receive your approved ED visa. The entire process takes 30-45 days.
You never leave Thailand during this process. For complete details on extending your ED visa after the first 90 days, see our Thailand ED Visa Extension Guide.
What Is the Complete Timeline?
Here’s the typical timeline GEOS students follow to change from a tourist visa to an education visa:
Week 1: Enrollment and Document Preparation
Contact GEOS to discuss your current visa status. We recommend having at least 45-60 days remaining on your tourist visa or visa exemption to complete the process safely.
Enroll in your GEOS course and pay the first term (28,500 THB for English or Japanese, 25,000 THB for Thai). GEOS immediately begins preparing your acceptance letter and all school paperwork.
GEOS collects your passport, passport photos, and TM30 documentation. We handle all document preparation—you don’t need to gather materials yourself.
If you don’t have a Thai phone number yet, purchase a Thai SIM card. Immigration will call you during your first visit to verify your contact information.
Week 2: MOE Application
GEOS submits your complete application to the Ministry of Education (MOE). The MOE application includes your school acceptance letter, course details, and all supporting documentation.
Week 3: MOE Approval (10 days)
Wait 10 days for MOE to process your application and issue visa paperwork. GEOS tracks your application status and informs you when MOE approval is received.
Week 3-4: First Immigration Visit (Document Check)
Once MOE approves your application, GEOS schedules the first immigration visit at Chaeng Watthana. GEOS takes all students who applied during the same period as a group.
At this first visit to the immigration office, you pay 2,000 THB directly to the immigration officer for your visa application fee. Immigration officers then:
- Call your Thai phone number to verify contact information
- Check that you have all the necessary paperwork
- Take your photo
- Record your phone number
- Give you an appointment date for your second visit
You must have at least 15 days remaining on your current visa or stamp before this first immigration visit.
Week 4-5: Second Immigration Visit (ED Visa Issuance)
All GEOS students return to Chaeng Watthana Immigration together on the appointment date given during your first visit.
Immigration processes your application and issues your non-immigrant ED visa. Your ED visa is valid for 90 days from the date of approval.
English students can start classes immediately after submitting the MOE application (Week 2). Thai and Japanese students wait for the monthly enrollment dates.
Total timeline: 30-45 days from enrollment to ED visa approval
Which Countries Require Criminal Record Checks?
Nationals of certain countries are required to submit criminal record checks with their ED visa applications. The requirements differ based on your region:
African Countries (Two Criminal Record Checks Required):
Students from African countries must obtain:
- A criminal record check from their home country
- A criminal record check from Thailand
This double requirement adds 3-4 weeks to the process, extending the total timeline to 50-60 days.
African countries requiring criminal record checks:
Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tomeo, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe
Asian and Middle Eastern Countries (Thailand Criminal Record Check Only):
Students from Asian and Middle Eastern countries must obtain a criminal record check from Thailand only (not from their home country). This requirement adds 2-3 weeks to the process, extending the total timeline to 50-60 days.
Asia: Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
Middle East: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestinian Authority, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Yemen
Criminal record check requirements:
For home country criminal record checks (African countries only):
- Issued within the last 3 months
- Officially translated into English or Thai
- Legalized by your country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Legalized by the Thai embassy in your home country
For Thailand criminal record checks (all listed countries):
- Obtained from the Royal Thai Police in Bangkok
- GEOS guides you through the application process
- Processing time: 1-2 weeks in Thailand
GEOS guides students from all countries requiring criminal record checks through the process. For African students, we recommend starting your home country criminal record check application before arriving in Thailand to avoid delays. When Can You Start Classes?
Your start date depends on which language you’re studying:
You can start classes immediately after GEOS submits your MOE application (approximately Week 2 of the visa process). You don’t need to wait for ED visa approval to begin studying.
GEOS uses the direct method with open-book levels, which means there are no fixed intake dates. You can start any week of the year and join the appropriate level class based on your placement test.
Monthly enrollment dates. New students begin on the first Monday of each month. You enroll and complete the visa process, then start classes on the next available monthly intake.
Monthly enrollment dates. New students begin on specific dates each month (limited to 15 students per intake). You enroll and complete the visa process, then start classes on the next available monthly intake.
How Long Can You Stay in Thailand?
Your allowed length of stay depends on which language you’re studying:
English Program: 12 months without leaving Thailand
Initial ED visa: 90 days
5 extensions at immigration: Variable lengths totaling approximately 9 months
Total: 12 months without leaving the country
Each extension costs 1,900 THB, paid directly to immigration. You never need to leave Thailand during your English program.
Thai Program: 14 months total (requires one exit and re-entry)
First ED visa period: Approximately 8 months (initial 90 days plus 3-4 extensions)
Exit Thailand and reapply for a new ED visa
Second ED visa period: Approximately 6 months (initial 90 days plus 2-3 extensions)
Total: 14 months across 6-7 extensions
Japanese Program: 15 months total (requires one exit and re-entry)
First ED visa period: Approximately 10 months (initial 90 days plus 3-4 extensions)
Exit Thailand and reapply for a new ED visa
Second ED visa period: Approximately 5 months (initial 90 days plus 2-3 extensions)
Total: 15 months across 6-7 extensions
Why extension lengths vary:
Immigration officers determine extension lengths based on your course completion date and current immigration policies. Some students receive 90-day extensions throughout their course, while others receive shorter periods (60 days, 30 days, or even 20 days) that align precisely with their course completion date. Schools cannot predict exact extension periods in advance.
When Thai or Japanese ED visa students need to leave Thailand, GEOS guides you through the re-application process. The second ED visa application follows the same 30-45 day timeline and requires the same documents.
Understanding Your ED Visa Extensions and Requirements
Extension costs:
Each extension: 1,900 THB (paid directly to immigration, regardless of length)
Re-entry permit (single): 1,000 THB (paid directly to immigration)
Re-entry permit (multiple): 3,800 THB (paid directly to immigration)
Extension timeline:
You can apply for your extension up to 30 days before your current stamp expires, but no later than the day of expiration. GEOS sends reminders before each extension deadline so you never risk overstay penalties.
Re-entry permits:
If you plan to leave Thailand during your studies (for holidays or travel), you must apply for a re-entry permit before departure. You can apply at Chaeng Watthana Immigration or at the airport before your flight. Without a re-entry permit, your extension of stay will be cancelled when you exit Thailand.
Single re-entry permits cost 1,000 THB and allow one exit and re-entry. Multiple re-entry permits cost 3,800 THB and allow unlimited exits within your visa validity period.
For step-by-step instructions on applying for re-entry permits at both locations, see our complete re-entry permit guide.
90-day reporting:
International students currently studying in Thailand must report their address to the immigration bureau every 90 days. This is separate from your visa extensions and is mandatory for all long-term visa holders. Failure to submit 90-day reports results in fines of 2,000 THB per missed report.
Attendance requirements:
You must maintain at least 80% attendance in your classes. Immigration officers may request attendance records when you apply for an extension of stay. If an ED visa holder breaches attendance requirements, your stay permit will be revoked.
Study and work restrictions:
You must pursue full-time education at GEOS only. You cannot work or study at a different institution while on an ED visa. If a visa holder breaches the entry conditions by working illegally, they face deportation and may be prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.
GEOS staff accompany students to the office of the immigration bureau for their first extension. We help you prepare all the required documents and navigate the process so there are no surprises. Once you’re settled in Bangkok on your ED visa, you’ll also need to open a Thai bank account and may want to get a Thai driver’s license for full integration into daily life.
What If My Current Visa Is Expiring Soon?
We recommend having at least 45-60 days remaining on your tourist visa or visa exemption stamp to safely complete the ED visa conversion process.
If you have less than 45 days remaining, contact GEOS immediately. We assess your situation and recommend whether you should:
- Extend your tourist visa by 30 days at immigration (1,900 THB paid to immigration) to give adequate processing time
- Exit and re-enter Thailand on a new visa exemption stamp (30 days) before starting the ED visa process
- Apply for an ED visa immediately if you have exactly 45 days remaining
Tourist and visa exemption extensions:
You can extend a 60-day tourist visa or 30-day visa exemption stamp by 30 days at Chaeng Watthana Immigration for 1,900 THB paid directly to immigration. Tourist visa extensions take half a day at the immigration office.
What happens if you overstay:
Thailand does not offer a grace period for visa expiration. If you overstay by even one day, you face a 500 THB per day fine (capped at 20,000 THB). Serious overstays may result in being prohibited from entering Thailand in the future.
GEOS carefully tracks your visa expiration date and ensures all applications are submitted with adequate time. We’ve never had a student overstay during the ED visa application process in 20+ years.
How Much Does the Complete Process Cost?

What Happens If Your Education Visa Is Rejected?
Education visa rejections are extremely rare when students apply through an MOE-recognized school with proper documentation.
At GEOS, we maintain a 100% approval rate for students who submit complete applications through our MOE process.
Why rejections happen:
Your school doesn’t have a license to establish an educational institution
Your passport has insufficient validity (less than 6 months remaining)
You have immigration violation history (previous overstays or bans)
You’re from a country requiring a criminal record check, and didn’t provide one
How GEOS prevents rejections:
We’ve maintained MOE recognition and our license to establish an educational institution for over 20 years. Immigration officers at Chaeng Watthana recognize GEOS applications and trust our documentation.
We handle all required documents on your behalf. Our staff prepares MOE applications according to current immigration requirements, ensuring nothing is missing or incorrect.
We verify your passport validity and visa timeline before accepting enrollment. If your passport is expiring soon or you have insufficient time on your current visa, we will inform you before you pay any fees.
What to do if rejection happens:
We review why the rejection occurred and determine the next steps. In the extremely rare cases where rejections happen, they typically result from passport validity issues or immigration history problems rather than school documentation.
You can reapply once the issue is fixed. ED visa rejections don’t create automatic blacklisting.
FAQs
No. ED visa applications require MOE approval first, and only registered educational institutions with valid MOE licenses can submit MOE applications. Individual students cannot apply directly to MOE or immigration without going through an authorized school.
No. Unlike some other visa types, education visa applications at Bangkok Immigration do not require proof of funds or minimum bank balance requirements.
Enroll at least 45-60 days before your current visa or stamp expires to ensure adequate processing time.
No. Non-immigrant ED visas do not permit employment. If a visa holder breaches the entry conditions by working illegally, you face deportation and immigration blacklisting.
You cannot transfer your ED visa to a different school. Your visa is issued specifically for study at GEOS. If you want to change schools, you must cancel your current ED visa, leave Thailand, and apply for a new ED visa through your new school.
Missing your appointment delays your visa approval and may require rescheduling with the next group. GEOS sends multiple reminders before appointment dates to prevent missed appointments.
Yes, but you must apply for a re-entry permit at Chaeng Watthana Immigration before you leave. Without a re-entry permit, your extension of stay is cancelled when you exit Thailand.
Important: Immigration officers at the airport may question ED visa holders who leave Thailand frequently. While traveling on an ED visa is legal with a re-entry permit, immigration officers have discretion to ask about your study attendance and reasons for frequent travel. GEOS recommends limiting international travel during your studies to avoid potential issues at immigration.
Only if you’re from specific countries in Africa, Asia, or the Middle East. African students need two criminal record checks (from their home country and Thailand). Asian and Middle Eastern students need only a Thailand criminal record check. See the criminal record check section above for the complete list.
International students are typically given 7-15 days after course completion to leave Thailand or change the type of visa. You cannot remain on an ED visa after your course ends.
